About the Role
The African Caribbean Centre is seeking to hire two (2) summer students for the part-time Energy Awareness Project:
Camp Coordinator for Youth
Camp Coordinator for the Kids Camp
These camps are offered for 8 weeks from July 3rd to August 30th, 2023, three days a week on Mondays, Wednesdays, & Fridays.
The successful applicants will have experience working with children to ensure the safety of children and youth. They will also have knowledge and skills about the learning opportunities in the context of essential environmental concerns and the impact of climate change. The summer students must ensure the safety and wellbeing of the participants. You will provide supervision to children and youth activities to ensure a safe environment.
Primary Job duties:
Plan summer camp activities by implementing environmental awareness workshops,
Facilitate activities to provide awareness and education
Set up equipment for the community garden to plant vegetables
Provide learning experiences for the participants and their families.
Qualifications:
Ability to build good relationships with children and youth are essential
Knowledge about outdoor activities, including community gardens, waste management skills, pollution reduction, saving energy, clean water, and wildfire preventive awareness projects.
Willing to work well with others and our environmental partner organizations.
We want to meet you if you are patient and energetic and have the ability to provide structure and good boundaries for participants.
You must be able to:
Resolve conflict between participants by addressing behavioural issues.
Ensure all safety procedures are followed for the well-being of the participants.
Ensure the camping site is clean and campers do not litter recreational areas/ environment.
Set up and maintain equipment as required.
Perform first aid as required.
Keep accurate incident logs.
Responsibilities:
Plan outdoor exploration activities that provide learning opportunities with an environmental focus
Plan alternate indoor workshops
Create weekly/ daily schedules that are age-appropriate
Lead educational activities (such as creating crafts with recyclable materials, teaching electronic recycling, waste management skills and safe energy resources.
Provide workshops/ presentations about environment preparedness using videos, speakers, and teachable moments
Model environmental awareness and responsibility
Educate campers through games and exploration of the natural environment.
Set up and maintain equipment keeping safety in the forefront.
Requirements:
Proven experience in management and organizing camps or similar roles working with children and youth in a positive environment.
Knowledge with camping and various outdoor activities
Patient and reliable
Organizational and communication skills
Caring and empathetic attitude
Energetic and positive personality
Ability to meet the physical demands of the job (strength and stamina to follow strenuous activities like hiking, running, crouching, or carrying children)
First aid- and CPR-certified preferred
High school diploma
Child Intervention Check
Vulnerable Sector Check
Wages: $15/hr
